Slogans

A well-written business slogan can serve as a short statement representative of the company in question. Because these slogans often become irrevocably tied to the companies they were written to represent, it is wise to exercise care when composing your business slogan. To ensure your statement sends the desired method, keep some basics principles of slogan composition in mind as you move through the writing process.

Spend Time BrainstormingDon’t be too eager to write the slogan and get on with business as usual. Instead, gather a group of creative workers or business leaders together and brainstorm ideas for this slogan. Ask the gathered group what message you hope to get across with the slogan and ask them to suggest words or phrases that could convey this message effectively. Write these suggestions down and let them guide your slogan writing.

Keep it ShortWhen it comes to slogan writing, the old adage “less is more” applies. Don’t create a slogan that is overly long or filled with complex language. Instead, pick a short and pithy phrase that rolls off the tongue and will be easy for all to remember. While there is no strict word limit for your slogan, keeping it under five words is wise.

Verbalize Your SloganInstead of just writing down potential slogans, say them aloud. As you do, listen for musicality. The most effective slogans are rhythmic and lilting. As you say the slogan at a natural pace, it should simply flow into the air, not contain an assortment of pauses and complex syllable patterns. If your slogan lacks this natural flow, consider revising it or replacing words.

Ponder Your ChoiceInstead of committing to a slogan only to later change your mind, give yourself some time to think about it. After selecting a slogan that you feel is strong, step back from the slogan selection process and give yourself a few days to think it over. At the end of this block of days, review the slogan once more with fresh, rested eyes and decide if it still holds the same appeal it did when you initially wrote it. If it doesn’t, go back to the drawing board. If it does, move forward with slogan implementation.
